1984 Nebraska Cornhuskers

The 1984 Nebraska offense was led by Jeff Smith and Doug Dubose.

The 1984 Nebraska Cornhuskers’ accomplishments have been overshadowed by the great teams in 1982 and 1983. The 1984 edition of the Huskers finished 10–2, were Big 8 co-champions and finished number three in the final polls. They came from behind to beat LSU 28–10 in the Sugar Bowl.

What many people don’t remember is that they had one of the best defenses in school history. The 1984 Blackshirts held opposing teams to 9.5 points and 202 yards per game.

After the Sugar Bowl win, Coach Tom Osborne said: “This is one of the biggest wins we’ve had at Nebraska…I think we’ll be fairly high in the rankings, possibly second or third. And maybe there’s a chance of being number one.”

Nebraska went 34–4 between 1982–84, the best record by any team in the country. It was an era of glory for Nebraska football.
