The GOP thew a party at the White House in 2017 after they passed the unpopular and regressive Trump Care bill.

Democracy Is On The Ballot On November 6

As I’ve discussed here earlier, the U.S. is currently living under a tyranny of the minority. In 2016, the GOP finished second in the popular vote in both the presidential and senatorial elections. In addition, the extreme gerrymandering in the House is responsible for 22 out of the 23 seat GOP majority in the House.

The GOP has leveraged that minority rule to jam through an agenda that is opposed by the majority of the American people. The GOP is aware that their agenda isn’t popular since they are rarely mentioning the tax cuts in their TV ads and they are falsely claiming that they support pre-existing condition protections.

If the GOP wins this fall, this country’s Kabuki democracy will be extended another two years and perhaps even longer. That’s why it is so important for the Democrats to regain control of the House and make major gains in gubernatorial and state legislative races.

Democratic control of the House would end two years of unchecked power by Trump and a radicalized GOP. In addition, a Democratic majority could conduct genuine oversight regarding the corruption and incompetence of the current administration. The Founding Fathers never foresaw such a spineless Congress.

The races at the state level are especially important. In 2010, the GOP invested significant resources in gubernatorial and state legislative races aimed at controlling the Congressional re-districting process. Because millions of Democrats stayed home that year, the GOP won a landslide at the state level and the GOP used extreme gerrymandering to strengthen their control over the U.S. House of Representatives and state legislative chambers.

Because there will be a census in 2020, it’s very important that Democrats do well at the state level this year and in 2020. Democrats have recognized that opportunity and such luminaries as Eric Holder have been raising money to help Democrats running at the state level.

If the GOP should prevail in 2018 and 2020, they will continue to use gerrymandering to put the U.S. House and many state legislative chambers out of reach for the Democrats. After the GOP wins an election, one of their highest priorities is to re-write the rules so they can’t lose power and face accountability from the voters. The GOP’s agenda is so widely reviled they know they can’t win a fair election.

In the unlikely event we fall short on November 6, the GOP will draw the conclusion that they are invincible and can never lose again. An electoral victory would further embolden an already radicalized GOP and make them even more drunk with power.

The GOP’s agenda for 2019–2020 has been widely discussed by their party leaders. Already, McConnell has said that a GOP majority would cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Notwithstanding their recent deceptive rhetoric, the D.C. Republicans will weaken or end pre-existing condition protections. In addition, there is even talk about another tax cut that would favor the wealthy.

The progressive reforms of the 20th and 21st century are on the ballot this fall. The Democratic Party will protect your health care and pensions. The GOP will take them away to fund more tax cuts for their wealthy special interest allies

And even more important is that democracy itself is on the ballot. If don’t we defeat the GOP on November 6, this could be the last truly free election in American history. A victorious GOP would write the rules so as to insure they could never lose again. We would still have elections but the outcome would be pre-determined due to extreme gerrymandering, dark money from billionaires and a judiciary packed with partisan judges. We can’t let that happen.

I’m still confident that we will win. I’m an avid poll watcher and I can tell you that the GOP position in the House has been steadily eroding since August. The so-called “Kavanaugh bump” was brief and has since dissipated. Proof that the electorate is trending our way can be found in Nebraska CD02. Nate Silver has moved the race from the “lean Republican” to the“toss up” category. That is happening all over the country.

We must take nothing for granted. We must continue to work hard to get out the vote. We can do it! Let’s leave it all on the field on November 6!

I’m a trial lawyer, a Democratic activist and a sports fan.
