Desperate Days: Paul Ryan’s Super PAC Is Lying About Kara Eastman

The political situation for the GOP has visibly deteriorated in the last few weeks as the news cycle has been dominated by the incompetence and mental instability of Donald Trump. In addition, the country has been rocked by the rampant corruption of the Republicans in Washington.

Two new reputable polls have put Trump’s approval rating at an abysmal level of 36%. Moreover, several recent national polls have given the Democrats a double digit lead in the generic Congressional vote. Even the latest Fox News poll has given the Democrats an eleven point national lead.

We are seeing that same trend in the Congressional race in Nebraska CD02 between Kara Eastman and Don Bacon. Nate Silver has deemed this race to be leaning Democratic and gives Eastman a 60% chance of winning in November. This seat represents one of the Democrats’ best pick up opportunities since Bacon only beat Brad Ashford by one point in 2016 in what turned out to be a poor cycle for the Democratic Party.

The national GOP knows that Bacon is in trouble since Paul Ryan’s Super PAC — the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) — has begun to run a series of dishonest ads in Nebraska CD02 attacking Eastman. The ad — among other things — makes the false claim that Eastman wants to raise everybody’s taxes by an average amount of $2,500.00.

The ad is so mendacious that it was evaluated by Politifact — a non-partisan and Pulitzer Prize winning fact checking site. Politifact is the best in the business. Politifact termed the CLF ad “false” because Eastman has made it perfectly clear that she only wants to repeal the Trump tax cuts for the top 1% and corporations. The Second District candidate — like all federal Nebraska Democratic candidate — supports extending the middle class tax cuts without increasing the deficit.

The credibility of CLF is especially suspect since it used emails stolen from the Russians in 2016 to smear Democratic House candidates. For example, CLF used information from the Russians to attack Joe Garcia in a race in south Florida. This was a district that was carried by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The Republican candidate narrowly defeated Garcia in the 2016 general election.

In 2016, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called out Ryan and CLF for using information that came from the Russians. Even though Ryan knew the dirt on Garcia came from the Russians, he did nothing to stop it. A spokesman for Ryan blandly stated: “Speaker Ryan has said for months that foreign intervention in our elections is unacceptable.”

Further undermining the veracity of CLF is the fact that their campaign cash comes from well heeled out of state special interest groups. CLF receives its money from the financial services industry, oil companies, natural gas companies and the pharmaceutical companies. The special interests backing Bacon’s campaign favor more pollution, higher gas prices and increased costs for prescription drugs.

Bacon’s super wealthy friends at CLF are not true patriots and don’t support the middle class. It’s obvious that CLF and their special interest donors don’t share Nebraska values. Bacon needs to intervene with his close ally Paul Ryan and demand that CLF stay out of Nebraska CD02. If Bacon doesn’t do that, it means he supports everything CLF stands for and does.

I don’t think I have to tell you that this may be the most important election of our lifetimes. Democracy and the rule of law are on the ballot. If the GOP retains control of the Congress, this means our democracy is broken. This is an historically unpopular president and Congress who have been governing against the will of the majority. The D.C. Republicans act like they will never face any accountability from the voters. Let’s prove them wrong on November 6!
