I predict Roe will be reduced a meaningless precedent and just about any state restriction will be affirmed. The SCOTUS should care to a certain extent about public opinion because they don't want to be perceived as political. That would explain the recent statements from Coney Barrett and Thomas denying the current SCOTUS majority is political. The SCOTUS has to preserve its legitimacy by being above politics or appearing to be above politics. Unfortunately, this "conservative" majority is very political and delivering political victories to the GOP and it allies. The SCOTUS had crises of legitimacy after the 1857 Dredd Scott decision and during the early 1930s when they threw out part of the New Deal. In those cases, the SCOTUS took sides on the most hot button political issues of the time. It caused a public furor. Lincoln added a seat to the SCOTUS and FDR tried to add several seats.
