The news cycle has been consumed by the swift Taliban conquest of Afghanistan and the evacuation (now) of over 120,000 people by our heroic servicemen and women. After a poor start, the evacuation has accomplished a great deal. Saving over 120,000 lives is very commendable. Only the U.S. could accomplish something like this.
Nonetheless, President Biden’s critics in the “liberal” mainstream media and the Republican Party have alleged that the evacuation should have been very peaceful and orderly. To his credit, Biden has now called out his critics: “I know of no conflict, as a student of history — no conflict where, when a war was ending, one side was able to guarantee that everyone that wanted to be extracted from that country would get out.”
Let’s take a little trip down memory lane in search of what I will call the “immaculate evacuation.”
Dunkirk in 1940 is undoubtedly the most famous evacuation in military history. After being trapped against the English Channel by the Germany Army, 330,000 Allied troops made it safely to Britain. It was correctly called the “Miracle of Dunkirk” and — along with Winston Churchill’s inspirational leadership- it helped galvanize the British people to defend their island against a potential German invasion.
Nevertheless, Dunkirk wasn’t some kind of seamless or orderly evacuation. 16,000 Allied soldiers were killed, the British left behind enough equipment to equip 8 to 10 divisions and approximately 30,000 to 40,000 French troops were left behind.
What is seldom discussed is that around 70,000 British troops were still in the Paris area after Dunkirk. Eventually, 10,000 British troops were taken prisoner and the rest were evacuated from the Brittany peninsula.
This second Dunkirk was a horror show. On June 17, 1940, German bombers sank a British ship and between 3,000 and 5,800 people lost their lives during the sinking. It was the the largest single-ship loss of life in British maritime history.
Just imagine if the GOP, Fox News and the mainstream media had been around in 1940. They would’ve declared the British evacuations a total disaster. They would’ve made Churchill’s job a lot harder.
The other most well known evacuations were from Da Nang and Saigon in 1975. The Da Nang evacuation would’ve outraged today’s mainstream media and the GOP. The highways around Da Nang were littered for miles with U.S. military equipment from South Vietnamese soldiers who quit — tanks, jeeps, uniforms, helmets, artillery pieces and guns. South Vietnamese soldiers literally beat up civilians to get on the last flights to Saigon.
The Saigon evacuation was no better. Desperate Vietnamese commandeered boats and helicopters to reach U.S. ships deployed off shore. Only 7,000 people were evacuated from Saigon before the North Vietnamese captured the city. It was truly a fiasco that makes Kabul look like a picnic.
Now if somebody can find me an example or examples of some immaculate military evacuations, please enlighten us. I’m a pretty serious history buff and I’m always ready to learn something new. Thanks!
Biden inherited a mess in Afghanistan thanks to Trump’s disastrous 2020 Doha treaty which sold out the Afghan people. It was the biggest sellout since Munich 1938. Former Trump National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster described the Doha agreement in scathing terms: “Our secretary of state (Mike Pompeo) signed a surrender agreement with the Taliban. This collapse goes back to the capitulation agreement of 2020. The Taliban didn’t defeat us. We defeated ourselves.”
What that meant was that when President Biden took office, he inherited a deeply flawed agreement that Trump negotiated with the Taliban — which left the Taliban in the strongest position militarily since 2001 and imposed a May 1, 2021 deadline on U.S. Forces. Biden’s choice was either to withdraw or escalate. There were no easy choices.
As Carnegie Endowment Senior Fellow Stephen Wertheim said it best: “You don’t get to lose a war and expect the result to look like you won it.”
The people complaining about the last week’s chaos in Kabul are focusing on that because they don’t have the guts to admit that they favor a forever war in Afghanistan. That would raise a lot of tough questions for which they have no answer.
It’s now time for the war hawks to reveal their plans for a forever war. What will be the costs? The goals? How long will it take? I want to hear from the likes of Ben Sasse about this. Bring it! I look forward to hearing from you!
The people who want the U.S. to be involved in forever wars want to be returned to power in 2022. If the GOP regains controls of Congress they will shutdown the government in an attempt to cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA. They will even cut funding for vaccines and vaccine distribution to appease their extreme base.
The 2022 election is literally a matter of life or death. It’s time for the responsible vaccinated voters — not to walk to the polls — but run to the polls next year. Let’s get it done!
