Let’s Keep Our Eye On The Real Crisis
Trump and the radical right would like you to believe there is a crisis at the border and have you focus on it to the exclusion of everything else.
Let’s look at the facts. According to a new study published by the Pew Research Center, the number of undocumented immigrants in the United States is at 10.7 million in 2016, down from a peak of 12.2 million in 2007. In other words, by the time Barack Obama left office, the number of undocumented immigrants living in the United States was at its lowest level in a decade.
The Administration is using this phony border “crisis” and caravan to distract you from the unraveling of the U.S. economy. As we know, GM just laid off 14,700 workers after receiving a $514 million tax break as a result of Trump’s deficit financed tax cuts. GM chose to invest these tax cuts in stock buybacks and dividend payments to well heeled corporate executives and insiders. They didn’t invest in their workers.
Trump’s trade war cost GM $1 billion in higher steel costs. At the same time, the Trump’s tariffs have also cost Ford $1 billion and they are currently preparing for mass layoffs.
The farm sector has been devastated by Trump’s trade war with China and our closest allies. Farm bankruptcies have doubled since Trump took office and soybean exports to China are down 98%.
Let’s keep our eye focused on the ball here. The tax cuts are not working. The trade war is not working. This is the real crisis.
