People in Path of Hurricane Florence Have Been Let Down By Their So-Called Leaders
We are all praying for the people in the path of Hurricane Florence. However, those good people were badly let down by the climate change denial of their so-called leaders.
In 2012, North Carolina passed a law that banned using recent climate science to plan for the consequences of rising sea levels. As a consequence, there has been pell mell development on the coast of North Carolina. Now the many businesses and homes built on the coast are in grave danger from this monster storm.
Right wing entertainer Rush Limbaugh alleged that predictions of vast “doom and gloom” from Hurricane Florence are meant “to heighten the belief in climate change.” Limbaugh is a climate change denier and is very influential with the GOP base voters.
The argument from the GOP and the fossil fuels industry is that taking steps to reduce the incidence of climate change will hurt the economy. The U.S. doesn’t have to choose between expanding the economy and reducing green house emissions. We can achieve both goals at the same time.
As was recently reported on the New Republic website: “ Solar power is the fastest growing source of new energy worldwide, and the trend is expected to continue. The renewable energy industry is more labor-intensive than the fossil fuel industry, meaning that “more jobs are created for each unit of electricity generated from renewable sources than from fossil fuels,” according to the Union of Concerned Scientists. The International Renewable Energy Agency has said doubling the share of renewables in the global energy mix would increase the global GDP in 2030 by $1.3 trillion. Stabilizing the climate would also provide significant economic benefit — billions of dollars saved from lessening the severity of extreme weather and sea level rise, as well as billions more from the avoided health impacts of a warmer, more polluted atmosphere.”
Fighting climate change is a win-win proposition. We can have a stronger economy, a cleaner environment and a safer world!
