Political Earthquake In Kansas
There was a remarkable result last night in a special election in U.S. House District Kansas CD-04 last night. This district comprises Wichita and much of southeast Kansas. It is a ruby red district which has been dominated by the GOP since 1994.
The Republican won this race by a narrow margin of 53% to 46%. The GOP nominee won only after robo-calls from Trump and Pence, as well as a campaign stop from Ted Cruz.
Last November, Mike Pompeo (now the CIA Director) carried this district by 30 points. Trump carried KS-CD04 by 27 points. According to the Cook Political Report, this district has a GOP edge of plus 15.
What this means is that there has been a huge shift to the Democrats since November 9, 2016. Voters are already fed up with the incompetence and corruption of the Republicans in Washington.
The GOP is contending that it was more of a referendum on unpopular governor Sam Brownback. What they overlook is that Brownback’s policies are very similar to the ones being pursued in D.C. by Trump and the GOP controlled Congress. Brownback — like Trump — favors tax cuts for the rich financed by programs cuts to health care — and other programs that benefit the poor and middle class.
This Kansas result should encourage all Nebraska Democrats. Nebraska CD02 has a plus 4 GOP edge and Nebraska CD01 has a plus 11 GOP edge. That means that Bacon is most likely toast and even Fortenberry is vulnerable.
But first let’s focus first on the city elections in Lincoln and Omaha. The general election in Lincoln is May 2. Please vote for Leirion Gaylor Baird, Bennie Shobe and Maggie Mae Squires.
The Omaha general election is May 9. Please vote for Heath Mello for mayor. Last night in a feisty debate, Mello exposed Stothert’s incompetence and grotesque pay for play schemes.
Let’s get it done! We can do it!
