The Ten Best Teams In Nebraska Football History

  1. 1995 (12–0). This team didn’t have a close game all year. The 1995 Huskers defeated four teams in the final top 10 by an average score of 49–18. This team has been recognized by most experts as the greatest team of all time.

2. 1971 (13–0). This team was recognized as the greatest team of all time until Nebraska crushed Florida 62–24 in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl. The only close game was the 35–31 victory in the Game of the Century against second ranked Oklahoma. The 1971 Huskers defeated the teams ranked number 2, 3 and 4 in the final polls. (Oklahoma, Colorado and Alabama, respectively.)

3. 1994 (13–0). This team over came key injuries to Tommie Frazier and Mike Minter to defeat third ranked Colorado 24–7 and Miami in the Orange Bowl 24–17. (The Hurricanes were ranked third before the bowl games.)

4. 1997 (13–0). Tom Osborne’s last team defeated two teams ranked in the final top eight by average score of 49–21. (Kansas State and Tennessee.) A narrow 45–38 win at Missouri resulted in a split national title with Michigan.

5. 1970 (11–0–1). The Huskers won the national title on New Year’s Day by defeating LSU 17–12 after top ranked Texas and second ranked Ohio State were upset. The Huskers tied USC early in the season in Los Angeles but rolled through the Big 8 schedule. The Huskers split the national title with Texas and Ohio State because some final polls were taken before the bowl games.

6. 1983 (12–1). The “Scoring Explosion” held the top position in the polls all season until they were upset by Miami 31–30 in the Orange Bowl and finished second. During the regular season, the Huskers beat Penn St., UCLA and Oklahoma.

7. 1982 (12–1). The only loss was a controversial one to eventual national champion Penn St. 27–24 early in the season. They finished number three in the final polls.

8. 1999 (12–1). Frank Solich’s second squad was the last Husker team to win a conference title. The Huskers lost to Texas 24–20 in Austin but avenged that defeat by beating the Horns 22–6 in the Big 12 title game. The Huskers finished number two in the final coaches’ poll.

9. 1993 (11–1). This was a young team that laid the foundation for the 1994 and 1995 national titles. After a controversial 18–16 loss to Florida State in the national title game., the Huskers finished third.

10. 1965 (10–1). On New Years Day, the top ranked two teams lost and gave third ranked Nebraska a shot at the national title. Unfortunately, the Big Red lost the Orange Bowl to Alabama 39–28 and finished number 5.

Almost: 1984 Nebraska went 10–2 and finished number three. The 1980 Huskers went 10–2 and averaged forty points per game and only gave up ten points per game.
