We Can Win In 2022!
The 2022 election is shaping up to be a choice between Democratic achievements and GOP radicalism.
Since the Democrats have been in control of Washington, they have been very productive. In 2021, the Democrats passed the American Rescue Act and the Bi-Infrastructure plan. The American Rescue Act contained money for vaccines, middle class tax cuts and funding for more police. Every Republican voted no.
The Democrats have since ushered in the fastest economic recovery in U.S. history following the disastrous Republican response to the pandemic. Unemployment has declined from 6.4% to 3.6% and the number of people on unemployment benefits is down from 21 million to 1.4 million — the lowest level since 1970.
Republicans like to argue that this explosive job and GDP growth was just a coincidence or good luck. Or it was related to the end of the 2020 lockdowns.
According to Moody’s analysis of February 24.
The American Rescue Plan led to:
— 4 million additional jobs
— 2% lower unemployment
— — 5.7% GDP instead of 3%
— Only .35% incremental inflation increase
Without ARP: — risk of Spring 2021 double-dip recession
— far higher unemployment due to Delta
The D.C. Republicans would also like to disparage these economic achievements by blaming Biden for inflation. The reality is that inflation is largely caused by supply chain problems and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the present time, much of China is being locked down for that country’s so-called “zero covid” strategy. Is Biden responsible for idled factories and ports in China?
Due to these factors, inflation is a world wide problem We learned last week that the U.K.’s inflation rate jumped to a 40 year high of 9% in April. If US inflation is entirely Joe Biden’s fault, why are prices rising in the EU and UK at about the same rate? Apparently, the GOP believes that inflation in Europe was caused by the stimulus bill that Joe Biden signed way back in March 2021.
These achievements are jeopardized by the extremism of the GOP. The Republicans aren’t even hiding their radicalism anymore, like they used to do.
The Senate GOP platform has been a game changer in this election. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced a series of extreme proposals that includes a $1 trillion tax increase on over 100 million Americans, including senior citizens. Scott would like every American who doesn’t pay federal incomes taxes to have their taxes increased.
That same GOP scheme includes sunsetting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) every five years. The GOP would refuse to renew these programs without poison pills like cuts and privatization.
Another turning point in the campaign has been the draft opinion overruling Roe v. Wade that was leaked by a Republican on the Supreme Court. The shocking extremism of Alito’s draft opinion has set off a political firestorm. Alito and his four radical Republicans’ opinion is so reactionary that it would even threaten the 2015 Supreme Court decision on gay marriage.
The Republicans at both the state and federal level have gone equally radical on cultural and social issues. Former Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer summed up the GOP platform quite succinctly:
“The official position of the Republican party is that the government should dictate:
— what you say
— where you say it
— your health care decisions
— whom you marry
— which books you read
— what teachers can teach; and
— what private companies can believe”
The disturbing reality is that today’s radicalized GOP wants to dictate how Americans live their lives — that’s not freedom. Usually, the GOP waits until after the election to unveil its extreme platform, but not this year.
The GOP message in a nutshell is as follows: America sucks. Everything is terrible. We’re doomed. Does that message inspire voters?
The GOP’s radicalism is being noticed and is starting to turn off voters. There is scant sign of any red wave. The last four generic Congressional preference polls indicates no evidence of a red wave. The Democrats led by 5 points in the new NPR poll, and the Democrats also led by 2 points in two other polls. Only one poll showed a 4 point GOP lead.
Simply stated, the GOP platform is dangerous. We must do everything in our power to prevent the GOP from regaining power. When the Republicans are in charge, they wreck the country.
Vote for Patty Pansing Brooks in CD01! You will have to vote for Patty on June 28 and November 8.
