Will Nebraska’s Congressional Delegation Give Up Their Paychecks During The Trump Shutdown?

All five members of Nebraska’s all GOP Congressional delegation have voted to shutdown the government in order to finance Trump’s ridiculous border wall with Mexico. This is a partial shutdown and nine of the fifteen cabinet departments will be shuttered. Some federal workers will continue to be paid and others will be working for us for free.

According to the New York Times, approximately 380,000 employees are expected to be sent home, and another 420,000 considered too important to be furloughed — including airport security officials and Customs and Border Patrol officers — are to remain on the job without pay. Ironically, the federal employees currently providing border security will be working without a paycheck.

Interestingly enough, our representatives in the Congress have already appropriated funds for the Congress. What that means is that the members of Congress who voted to shutdown the government will continue to draw their annual $174,000.00 salary. How convenient for them. They don’t have to work very hard for this generous salary since the Congress only meets about 110 days per year.

In the last major government shutdown of 2013, most members of Congress gave up their paychecks during the shutdown. However, Johanns, Fischer, Fortenberry and Terry all kept their paychecks during this shutdown that cost the U.S. economy 120,000 jobs and $24 billion. Only Adrian Smith gave up his paycheck.

During the 2013 shutdown, Lee Terry committed political suicide when he defended his decision to keep his paycheck while thousands of federal workers who made a lot less money than him didn’t get paid. “Dang straight. “Whatever gets them good press,” Terry said. “That’s all that it’s going to be. God bless them. But you know what? I’ve got a nice house and a kid in college, and I’ll tell you we cannot handle it.”

All five members of Nebraska’s Congressional delegation should give up their paychecks until their shutdown is over. They don’t deserve to get paid and take another vacation while TSA and border security employees keeping us safe are working for free.

Nebraska’s members of Congress are spoiled and out of touch elitists. They do not share Nebraska values and nor do they represent their constituents. Instead, they are putting the temper tantrum of a man child president* first and stiffing many of the people who are working hard to keep us safe. This is probably the worst Congress in American history. We deserve so much better.
